China’s economy has struggled to recover from severe self-imposed restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic that it lifted only at the end of 2022. But Xi said that China was again contributing to world economic growth in the double digits percentage-wise. China's economy has been bogged down by a crisis in its property market in which builders are struggling under mountains of debt, and buyers are paying off loans on apartments that may never be completed. Other issues, such as an aging population and high youth unemployment, are prompting China's leaders to lean more heavily on boosting export manufacturing to make up for weak demand at home. “The respective successes of China and the United States create opportunities for each other," Xi was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Stephen Adams, a billionaire whose anonymous $100 million gift to the Yale School of Music granted a tuition-free education to talented students embarking on careers in a capricious profession, died on March 14 at his home in Roxbury, Conn. His death was confirmed by his wife, Denise (Rhea) Adams. Mr. Adams, who graduated from Yale College in 1959, was not a musician himself. In 1999, he marked his class’s 40th-anniversary reunion by donating $10 million to the music school — the largest contribution it had ever received. Six years later, he and his wife surpassed that record when they made their $100 million gift, anonymously.

New York CNN —Major League Baseball players will be wearing new jerseys this season. Some players have complained that there are fewer tailored options available for pants, and the players’ union has reportedly raised criticism of the jerseys to Nike and MLB. (The Major League Baseball Players’ Association did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.) Teams retire their most important players’ jersey numbers. “This is joining that narrative.”Some NHL fans, like baseball fans, are worried about Fanatics’ deal with the NHL to produce authentic jerseys players wear in games because of concerns about quality, limited selection and prices.

The imminent launch attempt follows closely on the heels of a separate US lunar landing mission that failed in January. After burning through its fuel, the rocket will detach from Odie, leaving the lunar lander to fly solo through space. Houston-based Intuitive Machines developed the Nova-C moon lander under a NASA initiative. Packed on board the lunar lander are six NASA science and technology payloads. The device is set to pop off of the lunar lander as it approaches the surface and capture images of the vehicle’s descent.

A robotic lunar lander is scheduled to launch in the early morning hours of Thursday, one day after a technical glitch postponed the first launch attempt. It is also the latest private effort to send spacecraft to the moon. But the company in charge of the latest effort, Intuitive Machines of Houston, is optimistic. “I feel fairly confident that we’re going to be successful softly touching down on the moon,” said Stephen Altemus, the president and chief executive of Intuitive Machines. It will amount to “a high-energy fastball pitch towards the moon,” as Intuitive Machines CEO Stephen Altemus put it. Once in Earth’s orbit, the lunar lander will separate from the rocket and begin venturing on its own, using an onboard engine to boost itself on a direct trajectory toward the lunar surface. Founded in 2013, Intuitive Machines will be the second of the CLPS program participants — after Astrobotic — to attempt a moon landing. If all goes according to plan, Odysseus will spend seven days operating on the moon as the lunar lander basks in the sun. Altemus estimates that Intuitive Machines has about an 80% chance of safely landing Odysseus on the moon.

Joe Manchin, West Virginia’s outgoing senator, bristles at the thought of being a spoiler in the 2024 presidential election. While he’s typically shied away from addressing the topic directly, his remarks on a potential presidential bid this week crystallized. Originally seeking the Democratic nomination against Biden, Kennedy opted instead to run as an independent, where polls show now show him siphoning support from Trump. Also running is Cornel West, the academic, activist and far-left candidate who’s polling around 4% to 6%. Enter Manchin, who stands to muddy the waters for the president and former president even more than they already are.

Their bodies, found several days later, had been dragged into the woods and covered with leaves, sticks and debris, police said. Clegg also is charged with several counts of falsifying physical evidence and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun. “They have no idea what gun killed the Reids,” Dominguez told the jury, adding that police “only had eyes” for Clegg’s gun. She later heard gunshots, then came across a man on the trail before continuing her hike. Defense attorneys argued that the man she saw on the trail was not Clegg because the clothing he had on did not match the prosecution’s description.

The tale provides an unlikely, ghastly background to the original 1858 ambrotype created during the future nation-saving Civil War president's ascendancy, an image which the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has added to its collection, officials said Tuesday. “Original images of Abraham Lincoln are extraordinarily rare, and images with a fascinating back story like this are even more rare," said Christina Shutt, executive director of the library and museum. The photo ... is a physical reminder of his kind spirit and concern for others,” said Ian Hunt, head of acquisitions for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
